Here are few small paperbacks that would help meet some of the questions that Richard Dawkins raises in his book, The God Delusion. They can be easily purchased or ordered through the local Christian bookshop.
Searching Issues by Nicky Gumbel (Kingsway Publications) is a popular little paperback that covers seven subjects that may be considered obstacles to the Christian faith. It deals with some of the issues Richard Dawkins raises. It was issued for use with the popular Alpha Course. One of the titles is, ‘Science and Christianity’. Nicky Gumbel practiced as a barrister for six years before being ordained into the Church of England.
It Makes Sense by Stephen Gaukroger (Scripture Union) is another paperback answering some of the puzzling questions of life. It covers more subjects than does Searching Issues and includes a chapter, ‘Science and faith – a fatal encounter.’ It is a very informative little paperback to keep for one’s self or to lend. Stephen Gaukroger is the senior minister of Gold Hill Baptist Church in Buckinghamshire – said to be the largest Baptist church in England. He is on the Council of Spurgeon's College, was President of the Baptist Union of Great Britain from 1994-95 and currently acts as a Consultant for the European Board of the Luis Palau Evangelistic Association. He has authored 27 books. It Makes Sense affirms the faith of the Christian as well is meeting the need of those inquiring into the Christian faith.
The Battle for the Bible by David Marshall is the story of the English Bible down to our modern translations, including information on how manuscripts and archaeological finds have proved the Bible right. Written in a very readable style, The Battle for the Bible is the story of how the Bible was written and when, and how it survived the centuries and how battle after battle was fought over its accuracy and, under remarkable circumstances, won. If Richard Dawkins had read this book alongside his ‘19th century’ Bible critics it would have saved him a lot of embarrassment over what he says about the Bible. David Marshall (Ph.D., University of Hull) taught for several years before becoming a writer and magazine editor. He has published 20 books on historical, travel, and biblical themes. He is currently the senior editor of the Stanborough Press.
