One Angry Physician

This is an interesting one-man website by a physician named, Stephen Hayes. Reading this introduction to his website and his anger in discovering that the evolutionary aspect of his education was a lot of brain-washing reminds me of an intelligent BSc graduate from Exeter who, as does Richard Dawkins, thought Christianity was just mere superstition and nonsense. His Christian girl friend used to get him to go to church with her with the hope he would discover something different. He in turn would go with her to prove to her from his logical mind what a load of nonsense Christianity was. An evangelist ran a public series of Bible Prophecy Lectures in the town and she persuaded him to go along. He readily accepted for different reasons than she had for inviting him. He would prove to her once and for all that this Bible thing was a lot of nonsense and then they could get on with life without any more of this religious stuff interfering in their lives. Something happened on that first night because he came away convinced that the Bible was true after all and began studying the Christian faith. But his conversion to Christianity was inhibited by his evolutionary-based educational upbringing – from junior through to university. How could he resolve this inner conflict – that Christianity presented a Creator God but his whole education at taught him a materialistic view of origins - that it wasn’t Intelligence that produced matter but matter which produced intelligence, you and me?

I am only an observer of this debate between Creation and Evolution – I have no science degree and like millions of others can only draw conclusions from what the scientists on both sides of the divide have to say. All I could do was to offer him a few books I then had in my library back in the early eighties. The books were produced by two authors; the one was A. E.Wilder-Smith and the other E. H. Andrews. I left them with him.

It was a while before I saw him again and I wondered what his response to them would be. As Dr. Stephen Hayes describes of himself, when I did meet my friend with his science degree I was confronted with a very angry young man – and my first thought was – was it to do with me? Was there something I had said that injured his feelings or integrity? But no, he had thoroughly studied the books I had given him and couldn’t believe how he had allowed himself to be so indoctrinated by his state education. He prided himself in being a very intelligent person and very logical in his thinking, which he was, so how could he have swallowed all that stuff about evolution and not questioned it? His conflict was resolved. He was baptised by immersion in his confession of his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Dr. Stephen Hayes presents some very important issues on his site that many scientists find disturbing about the educational system and the media promotion of evolution and its part in opposing any questioning of the Darwinian theory. Dr. Stephens is a Christian and you will find that he does express himself very strongly with regard to ridicule and derision as a way of intimidating and stifling debate on these issues. But as a hands-on-scientist – a physician, it may be that through his website he will bring healing to minds in conflict searching for resolution over creation and evolution?
